Acoustic Emission (AE) was used to detect micro-crack initiation in carbon fiber reinforced composites in 4-point bending. Fiber debonding and breakage occurred simultaneously and were the first defects to initiate in the examined materials.

The paper presents an automated algorithm which extracts wrinkle characteristics from B-Scan images of large composite parts typically from low resolution images. The method is validated using a synthetic wrinkle with known characteristics.
