BONDED REPAIRS OF COMPOSITE STRUCTURES: VOID FORMATION MECHANISMS IN AN ADHESIVE FILM

Mathieu Préau (McGill University) Nadine Auda-Kothari (McGill University) Pascal Hubert (McGill University)

Moisture-induced void formation and growth in a repair adhesive film was monitored throughout the cure. Porosity measurements matched well a diffusion-based analytical model for a variety of processing conditions representative of repair environments.

NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION INTO THE INFLUENCE OF GEOMETRIC PARAMETERS OF HYBRID COMPOSITE REPAIRS ON MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE

Markus Linke (University of Applied Sciences Hamburg) Philipp Abel (RWTH Aachen University) Thomas Gries (RWTH Aachen University)

The paper is about a hybrid repair for composites where the bonding area is reinforced with yarns that built small scale form fittings elements after curing in a co-bonding process. The tensile strength is restored to 86% of the undamaged specimens.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INTERLAMINAR SHEAR STRENGTH AND REPAIR CONDITIONS OF DELAMINATION BY THERMAL FUSION BONDING IN CF/PA6 LAMINATES

Manato Kanesaki (Kanazawa Institute of Technology) Mototsugu Tanaka (Kanazawa Institute of Technology) Hiroshi Saito (Kanazawa Institute of Technology) Kiyoshi Uzawa (Kanazawa Institute of Technology) Masaki Hojo (Kyoto University) Isao Kimpara (Kanazawa Institute of Technology)

We evaluated the effectiveness of repair using TFB on the delamination in CFRTP laminate. Interlaminar shear test using double-notched specimen was carried out to evaluate interlaminar shear strength at the region of repaired delamination.

SIZE REDUCED COMPOSITE REPAIRS BY PLY WISE SCARFING

Dirk Holzhüter (German Aerospace Center) Jens Kosmann (German Aerospace Center) Christian Hühne (German Aerospace Center) Michael Sinapius (Technische Universität Braunschweig) Martin Schollerer (German Aerospace Center)

The study introduces the concept of ply wise scarfed composite joints. The results are relevant to increase the number of bonded repairs under current certification restrictions and to develop high strength composite scarf repairs.

A MESO-SCALE MODEL TO STUDY THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF WOVEN CARBON FIBER REINFORCED PLASTICS

Jim Schormans (Eindhoven University of Technology) Wouter Wilson (Eindhoven University of Technology) Vikram Deshpande (University of Cambridge)

A method to homogenize fiber-tows is proposed that enables the simulation of the formation of kink-bands in woven laminates under compression. The method is tested on a unidirectional composite as well as a woven composite.

A NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF SMART POLYMER COMPOSITE WITH MICROCAPSULES FOR DAMAGE SENSING APPLICATIONS

Daiva Zeleniakiene (Kaunas University of Technology) Vitalis Leisis (Kaunas University of Technology) Paulius Griskevicius (Kaunas University of Technology) Olga Bulderberga (Institute of Polymer Mechanics, University of Latvia) Andrey Aniskevich (InstitUniversity of Latvia)

The mechanical behaviour of polymer composites with polyvinyl acetate matrix filled with melamine-formaldehyde resin microcapsules was investigated. Such composites as self-sensing materials could be used for damage sensing applications.

CONSTRAINT CONDITIONAL FINITE ELEMENT MODEL OF INTERFACIAL DEBONDING WITH ANISOTROPIC FRICTION

Yamaguchi Takehiro (Yamaguchi University) Koichi Goda (Yamaguchi University) Ryuta Kitamura (Tokyo University of Science)

In this study, we defined a new CC-FEM which was introduced anisotropic friction and genetic algorithm in order to extend two-dimensional model to three-dimensional version.

STRESS MEASUREMENT DURING CRACK PROPAGATION IN METAL MATRIX COMPOSITES USING MICRO-RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY

Akm Asif Iqbal (University Malaysia Pahang) Yoshio Arai (Saitama University)

The measurement of stress in the SiC particles during crack propagation was investigated by micro-Raman spectroscopy. A high decrease in stress was observed with the interfacial debonding and with the SiC particle fracture.
